- ½ tsp garlic powder
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 large onions (thinly sliced)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional)
For the Sandwich:
- 4 slices of thick-cut bread (or brioche buns)
- 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp butter (for toasting the bread)
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Caramelized Onions:
- Heat butter and olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions, salt, and brown sugar. Stir occasionally.
- Cook for 15-20 minutes until soft and golden brown.
- Add balsamic vinegar in the last 5 minutes for extra depth of flavor.
2️⃣ Grill the Steak:
- Preheat a grill or pan to high heat.
- Rub the steak with olive oil, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare (or adjust to your preferred doneness).
- Let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly.
3️⃣ Assemble the Sandwich:
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Place cheese on the unbuttered side, then add the sliced steak and caramelized onions.
- Top with another cheese slice and close the sandwich.
4️⃣ Toast the Sandwich:
- Heat a pan over medium heat and grill the sandwich for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cheese is melted.
